The chances of a patient developing a delirium while on the Intensive Care can be predicted fairly well. Dutch researcher Mark van den Boogaard (PhD) of the Radboud university medical centre Nijmegen, developed a model that better predicts the chances on a delirium than the treating doctors and nurses.
There is a model that predicts within 24hrs after ICU admission; PREDELIRIC model. Recently a new model is developed and validated that can predict delirium immediately after ICU admission; the E-PREDELIRIC model.
Goal of both models, and the accompanying application is to take preventive measures in high risk for ICU delirium patients, in order to improve the outcome for the patient. Both models facilitates doctors and nurses in recognizing the risks on a delirium.
